Cyclist, 84, involved in NOTL hit-and-run dies of injuries

First Published:

Police say an 84-year-old cyclist has died as a result of injuries sustained in a hit-and-run earlier this month in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The cyclist, identified as Nestor Chemerika, died in hospital Wednesday as a result of the injuries sustained in the incident.

Police say that Chemerika was struck by a vehicle around 7:50 p.m. on July 13 and was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition.

He was found laying in the ditch on East West Ln. by officers patrolling the area. Police believe the Chemerika was struck from behind while he was riding his bike westbound on the north side of East West Ln., between Niagara Rd. and Concession 2 Rd.

Investigators located and seized the pewter coloured 1999 GMC Sierra pickup truck involved in the collision in Niagara Falls on July 19.

They note that the damaged areas of the truck had recently undergone repair and used GMC auto parts had been used during the repairs, including a grill, headlights on the passenger side and a towing side view mirror also on the passenger side.

Investigation has revealed that after striking the victim the driver of the pickup truck fled, turning southbound on Concession Rd. 2 and then traveling to York Rd. where it would turn west into St. David’s.

The driver of the pickup truck has not been identified and no arrests have been made.

The investigation remains ongoing by Collision Reconstruction Unit detectives and anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the investigating officers by calling 905-0688-4111, option 3, extension 1009089.
