A report by an Independent Commission of the World Anti-Doping Agency could lead to all Russian athletes being banned from the 2016 summer Olympics in Rio. The lead investigator is a Canadian lawyer who confirmed widespread government sponsored doping by Russian athletes before and after the 2014 Sochi winter Olympics. The findings of the 2 month investigation were put on full display this morning in Toronto and pressure is mounting on the International Olympic Committee to discipline Russia ahead of the summer games.
“The system was set up after Russian authorities felt was an abysmal medal count by the Russian Olympic team at the 2010 Vancouver winter Olympics and was in place until at least August of 2015.” Richard McLaren, lead investigator.
Richard McLaren produced the report that uncovered a lab in Moscow that protected doped athletes and a Sochi laboratory used to swap sample tests so athletes who tested positive could still compete in the 2014 Olympic games. McLaren says the chain of command went as high as the Russian Federal secret service and the Ministry of Sport oversaw and controlled the swapping of tests.
The International Olympic Committee says they won’t hesitate in taking the toughest sanctions against Russia which could end with the team banned from the summer games. That decision will be made tomorrow. Russian President Vladimir Putin says officials named directly responsible in the doping report presented will be suspended. The report shows state-sponsored drug programs were impacting most sports but Putin says the calls for Russia’s expulsion from the games are politically motivated.
