Words and Pictures

Words and Pictures is a romantic drama from director Fred Schepisi (Six Degrees of Separation). Clive Owen stars as Jack Marcus, an english professor and writer that has fallen out of love with his job and the art of language. One day he meets a new teacher at the school, Dina Delsanto (Juliette Binoche), a once celebrated artist. The two immediately hit it off, and when Jack realizes he has an upcoming performance review, he sets up a challenge of words versus pictures pitting his English students with Dina’s artists to see which medium can convey greater meaning.
As you might expect from a film called Words and Pictures, it has both of those things in spades. Owen liked the fact that he had lots of speeches to deliver playing Jack. “You don’t very often get this much dialogue in a movie. This felt sometimes like theatre in terms of embracing the great dialogue and the great language. That was one of the things that attracted me, because that’s kind of your equipment to go to work as an actor – if you’ve got really good language.” Casting Binoche as the art teacher was a wise choice as she paints in her spare time. Executive producer Nancy Rae Stone explains that, “ When you see Juliette painting in the movie, she’s not faking it. That’s who she is.”
Words and Pictures is rated PG.
