What’s open and closed on Canada Day in Hamilton, Halton, Niagara regions

As Canada turns 159 on Wednesday, residents of the Hamilton, Halton and Niagara regions should prepare for a quiet day with most city services and administrative buildings closed for Canada Day.

Most grocery and retail stores including some malls such as LimeRidge Mall and Eastgate Square, Oakville Place and Burlington Centre are closed for this statutory holiday.

Public library locations, community centres, indoor pools, Canada Post, major bank branches and LCBO stores are also closed.

All non-emergency federal, provincial and municipal government offices, the greenhouse at Gage Park, all Hamilton civic museums, indoor pools, recreation centres, senior centres, arenas and the farmer’s market will also be closed.

Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) and the Disabled and Aged Regional Transportation System (DARTS) will be operating on a holiday schedule while GO transit will be running on a Saturday schedule.

Oakville Transit will offer its holiday service schedule from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Burlington Transit will operate on a Sunday schedule and Milton Transit will not be operating.

Transit services in St. Catharines, Welland and Niagara Falls will operate on a holiday schedule. There will be no service on Niagara Transit regional routes.

There will be no garbage pickup on Wednesday in Halton region. Instead, pickup will take place on Thursday.

Splash pads, Wild Waterworks and municipal golf courses will remain open along with select Beer Store locations.

Most restaurants will remain open for dine-in, takeout and delivery, but be sure to call ahead.

Some smaller grocery stores, such as Rabba Fine Foods will also be open in addition to some Starbucks locations and Terra Cotta Conservation Area in Halton Hills.

The Starlite Drive-In Theatre, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, the Royal Botanical Gardens and Hamilton conservation areas will also be open for entertainment on Wednesday.

Most businesses in Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake remain open, as both the city and the town are designated tourism destinations.

However, the other 10 municipalities in Niagara, including St. Catharines and Welland, are mostly shut down.
