‘We’re pushing back:’ Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tours Dofasco as tariffs loom

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited Hamilton’s ArcelorMittal Dofasco Friday morning, taking a tour of the steel factory and speaking with workers.
After the tour, the PM reassured workers that despite economic uncertainty in the face of a mounting tariff war with the United States, saying “we will keep standing strong for all of you.”
“I know it’s a bit of a challenge right now, there’s a little uncertainty — as you’re seeing from coast, to coast, to coast, people are standing up for Canadian workers,” he said. “We’re standing up strong, we’re pushing back.”
“Every step of the way, Canadians pull together — we faced Covid, we faced inflation — whatever it is, Canadians have been there for each other.”
Trudeau said the steel that is made through the efforts of both Canadians and Americans is some of the “best steel in the world.”
“The fact that we do things together in Canada and the United States, that makes a huge difference in our competitiveness as a market, and as a continent, and we’re going to keep doing that,” he added.
The incoming tariffs on imported steel and aluminum into the U.S. beginning on March 4, is very similar to the the tariffs that were imposed and retaliated against in 2018.
