VIDEO: Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria is set to hold a press conference at 2 p.m. in Grimsby.

Construction crews and officials gathered in Grimsby Thursday afternoon to officially begin major construction of a new GO station.

MPP for Niagara West Sam Oosterhoff was joined with the Metrolinx CEO and president Michael Lindsay for the announcement.

“Today, we’re reaching another important milestone — I’m pleased to announce that the government has allocated the contract for the Grimsby Go station and major construction is now underway on the new Grimsby Go station,” said Oosterhoff. “Shovels are in the ground. Machines are moving and crews are now, as we speak, building the station that families in Grimsby will use for many years to come.”

Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria was originally set to attend, but was unable to take part due to a sickness in the family.

The new station is part of Ontario’s $70 billion investment to expand transit in the province.

The new Grimsby GO Station will be built near Casablanca Boulevard, and feature one rail platform with heated shelter and canopy, a five-bay bus loop for GO and regional transit, 220 parking spaces, bicycle parking and dedicated passenger pick-up and drop-off zones.

The station is expected to finish construction in the second-half of 2027.
