Officers say they received several calls at around 4:20 a.m. of a shooting in the area of Highway 8 and Fruitland Road in Stoney Creek.
Police say they located two vehicles that had been involved in a crash just east of the intersection. One vehicle was a white Kia and the other was a red Acura.
Investigators say they found a teenage boy in the Acura who was suffering from multiple gunshots, who was then transported to hospital.
Officers say the teen died from his injuries later that evening, and have identified him as 16-year-old Faizaan Awan.
Detectives say that Awan was driving eastbound on Highway 8 while being chased by multiple vehicles.
During the pursuit there was a crash between the Acura and Kia resulting in the chase ending east of Fruitland Road.
They say that multiple gunshots were then fired at the Acura, and several people fled from the area in cars and on foot, leaving Awan behind at the scene.
Police closed parts of Highway 8 and Fruitland Road for several hours Thursday during the investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
