Voter info breach ‘huge’: privacy commissioner
Ontario’s privacy commissioner is blasting Elections Ontario for failing to encrypt data, after losing information on 2.4 million voters.
Privacy commissioner Ann Cavoukian launched an investigation after two memory sticks went missing from Elections Ontario in April. She discovered the USB sticks were supposed to be encrypted – but had not been.
Elections Ontario doesn’t know which districts’ voter data may be compromised, but it could include the ridings of:
- -Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale,
- -Burlington,
- -Halton,
- -Hamilton Centre,
- -and Toronto Centre.
Some of the information contained on the USB keys included full names and birthdays of voters and whether they voted in the last provincial election.
