Videographer sues Hamilton police for wrongful arrest

Hamilton police have been served with a $900 000 lawsuit filed by a Global television videographer who was detained near the scene of an accident that killed a ten-year-old Waterdown girl last May.

Jeremy Cohn was held for some time and then released without being charged. The statement of claim says police constable Jeffrey Todoruck had a duty to respect the rights of a member of the media reporting on matters in the public interest. The lawsuit says the officer breached his duty by wrongfully arresting and detaining Cohn.

Another cameraman at the same scene was arrested and charged, those charges against freelancer David Ritchie were eventually dropped.
