Niagara police say two people were injured by two unleashed Rottweiler dogs Thursday afternoon in the City of Niagara Falls.

Officers say they went to the area of Lundy’s Lane and Drummond Road at around 2:50 p.m., following reports of two unleashed Rottweiler dogs running loose without an owner.

Witnesses told them the dogs had allegedly attacked and killed a smaller dog, and had bitten a woman.

Police were told the dogs were actively attacking another person, while they were heading to the scene.

Const. Rich Hingley with Niagara Regional Police told CHCH News that the dogs severely attacked, and dragged a man onto the ground.

“While those officers were coming up with a plan to get these dogs under control, another member of the public had come by and those two dogs severely attacked, mauled and dragged another member of the public to the ground,” said Hingley.

An officer discharged their firearm to de-escalate and stop the attack.

Police say one dog was killed at the scene, and the other dog was transported away from the scene by the Humane Society.

“The officer that had to discharge his firearm in this case, did so in the event that there was an active human life at stake here,” said Hingley. “Those two dogs had this man on the ground, and unfortunately he had to make a decision, he made that decision quickly and saved a man’s life in this case.”

Niagara Emergency Medical Services were able to treat the two injured people.

Hingley said the man was sent to hospital for his injuries.

“Any charges that would come from this would be laid either by the Humane Society or the Provincial Animal Welfare Services,” said Hingley. “They’re the ones that would take carriage of any further investigations.”
