Teen girl charged in fatal December Hwy. 406 crash near St. Catharines

A St. Catharines teenager has been charged following a fatal collision on Highway 406 last December.

Police say after an “extensive investigation” involving members from Niagara OPP and the OPP Highway Safety Division Traffic Support Unit, the 19-year-old girl was arrested and charged with criminal driving offences related to the Dec. 3 incident.

The teen was driving southbound on the highway near Third Avenue when she lost control of the vehicle and rolled into the centre ditch.

The rear seat passenger, an 18-year-old girl from Thorold, was ejected and succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

The front seat passenger, a 20-year-old woman from Welland, and the driver were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries.

The driver has been charged with dangerous operation causing death and dangerous operation causing bodily harm.

She was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in St. Catharines on Oct. 19.
