PM Justin Trudeau holds late night meetings to discuss trucker convoys
Canada’s prime minister held several late-night meetings Thursday to brief all the opposition leaders on the latest developments and urged them to denounce the “illegal blockades and occupations happening across the country.”
Trudeau posted on Twitter that federal officials would continue working with provincial and municipal governments to end the protests, which he warned are “hurting jobs, businesses, and our country’s economy.”
“This evening, I had several meetings that were focused on the illegal blockades and occupations happening across the country. They’re harming the communities they’re taking place in – and they’re hurting jobs, businesses, and our country’s economy,” said Trudeau.
The prime minister said he also spoke with Windsor mayor Drew Dilkens about the illegal blockade at the Ambassador Bridge. “We’re committed to helping the Mayor and the province get the situation under control – because it is causing real harm to workers and economies on both sides of the border,” added Trudeau.
He added that the opposition parties had been briefed on the current situation and latest developments. “I stressed how important it is for all Members of Parliament, from every party, to denounce these illegal acts – and to call for an end to these blockades,” said Trudeau.
A convoy is also planned for this weekend in Fort Erie at the Peace Bridge.
Many Niagara Region residents are concerned about protestors making their way in the main arteries, clogging up the streets, slowing down access, and even hurting the ability to do business.
