The Toronto Maple Leafs launched their centennial celebration on Thursday at the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Some former ‘greats’ were on hand to talk about where the franchise came from, and what today’s fans can look forward to in the future.
This upcoming season for the Toronto Maple Leafs will be the 100th year for the Toronto franchise.
As part of that centennial celebration, the Hockey Hall of Fame has created a historic look back at the storied franchise.
The first Toronto team was called The Arenas and they won the Stanley Cup in only their second season.
They changed to the Toronto St. Pats in 1919 and to the Maple Leafs in 1927.
The Leafs last won the cup 50 years ago in 1967.
As part of the Centennial season, the Leafs will honour past ‘greats’ and play a Winter Classic against the Red Wings at BMO field.
Team President Brendan Shanahan says it’s important for today’s Leafs to understand the history of the team they play for.
“This is a big year as a hockey team, we are focused on building ourselves up to the examples that Ron Ellis and Johnny Bower have set for the Maple Leafs.”
Fans will have to wait until October to see their team don newly designed jerseys for the centennial season.
