Toronto-bound QEW reopens after deadly crash

The Toronto-bound lanes of the QEW in St Catharines have reopened, more than 24 hours after a fatal collision.

A Hamilton truck driver, James White, 53, and Mickel Sylvain, 20, of Brampton were killed in the crash, which happened around 4 am Thursday. A white Mitsubishi carrying three people and a black BMW with one person collided in the Niagara-bound lanes. A transport truck carrying large steel coils then hit the Mitsubishi and the centre median.

It flipped, spilling steel coils into the Toronto-bound lanes, where a tanker truck struck one of the coils.

Road crews have now repaired and repaved the Toronto-bound lanes near Highway 406, which reopened just after 4 this morning.

Apart from the two people killed, four others are in hospital.
