Hamilton police are searching for a man after a taxi driver was slashed in the head with a knife during an attempted robbery Tuesday.
The man police are looking for was picked up by a Hamilton cab driver Tuesday night downtown, but when it came time to pay his fare he pulled out a knife
“The customer was saying he will pay by debit and then I don’t know what happened, what prompted all this, but eventually he was attacked.” said Jagtar Singh Chahal, Chairman of Hamilton Cab.
That driver’s name is Shamsul Chowdhury. He was slashed across the forehead before the man took off
“There are 5 stitches in the middle of his head. A serious wound and lots of blood.”
“This driver was a very experienced driver. He has been working with us for many years and one of our best. A very good guy and a very professional driver.”
The cab driver picked the man up from the Five Star Café on James Street North and then drove him up the mountain. Police are asking any businesses in this area to see if there are any images of this man getting in to the cab.
A day later officers were canvassing a townhouse complex on Queen Victoria Drive where it all happened, looking for answers.
Police say the man is about 25 years old. In a video you can see at one point he tries to cover his face. He was wearing a black coat with fur around the hood and a Maple Leafs hat.
Cab drivers we spoke to said they don’t feel safe and want screens between the front and back seats.
“I have heard so many stories of people who just grab the seatbelt strap to the neck and then they do whatever they want to do.”
“We, all of our drivers, they would prefer screens because its safer. The camera makes a little difference but not as much as the screen.”
I especially don’t feel safe at night when it is dark and you don’t know where the customer is taking you.”
“I prefer the shield and I prefer the city to decide a law that all the passenger has to be in the back.”
Most drivers say they don’t carry a lot of cash on them. Chowdry only had $15 on him when he was attacked.
The driver had to have 5 stitches and is out of hospital and is recovering at home.
He does plan to return to work.
