System outage causes commercial traffic delays at southern Ontario border crossings from U.S. to Canada

Border crossings of commercial traffic from the U.S. to Canada in the New York area were severely delayed this morning due to a Canadian Border Services system outage.

The entry points of Peace Bridge, Rainbow Bridge and the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge were affected. Commercial traffic heading into the U.S. was not impacted.

The standstill caused a backup of tractor-trailers along Interstate 190-North in the state of New York. Trucks near the Peace Bridge were escorted to a staging area to help alleviate some of the congestion.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) said in a statement that it’s “working closely with IT partners to resolve this issue as soon as possible.”

“Primary inspection lanes at Peace Bridge and Queenston-Lewiston bridge have been staffed with officers to process traffic and shipments. We are actively working with our partners at the Peace Bridge Authority and the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission to assist with traffic control,” read a statement from the CBSA.

Regular commuter traffic heading into Canada at the crossings did not appear to be affected.
