Sunwing Vacations, WestJet Vacations cancels all operations to Cuba indefinitely

Sunwing Vacations Group says it will indefinitely suspend operations in Cuba, as the island country grapples with an increasingly desperate fuel shortage.

Management says it made the call due to the “current operating environment” in Cuba.

The WestJet Subsidiary says the move extends a decision made in April to halt all Sunwing Vacations and WestJet Vacations trips to Cuba from June 20 through to Oct. 9.

The suspension affects all bookings to the island with Sunwing Vacations, WestJet Vacations and WestJet Vacations Québec.

“We recognize this news may be disappointing for guests and travel advisors, particularly given the strong connection many Canadians have with Cuba and its people,” Sunwing said in a statement. “Cuba has long been a cherished destination for our guests, and we are mindful of the challenges currently facing local communities, tourism workers, and industry partners who rely on the sector.”

Air Transat stopped flying there six weeks ago, while Air Canada opted, in February, to suspend service due to a shortage of aviation fuel caused by an ongoing oil blockade by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Management staff said guests with existing bookings will be contacted directly and provided with options, including rebooking to an alternative destination or cancelling for a full refund.
