Summer McIntosh is the first Canadian to win 3 gold medals at a single Olympic game.

The 17-year-old captured her third gold medal by winning the women’s 200 metre individual medley final.

McIntosh says she’s processing her accomplishment but looks forward to coming home and celebrating with family and friends.

“Yeah, it’s been great, but it’ll definitely take a while for me to realize, like, what exactly we’ve done. I think it’ll sink in more once I head back to Canada,” McIntosh said.

The Toronto native says all her medals are special to her in different ways. “The 200 fly it is definitely one of my favourite events. And since my mom did that event back in 1984 at the Olympic Games to get gold, and that was a very special moment to share with her.”

McIntosh says for the next few weeks she’s going to try and take her mind off of swimming before heading back to Florida to train.

Kylie Masse won bronze for Canada in the women’s 200 metre backstroke. “Yeah, I feel happy, I feel a bit overwhelmed, and just I don’t really know again, still processing some emotions.”

The four-time Olympic medalist from Burlington says winning is life-changing. “This is the pinnacle of our sport. This is the highest you can get in swimming. So I know that’s not the case for every sport, but for us, it’s it really is the top.”

Another gold for Canada as Ethan Katzenberg won first place with his first throw at the Olympic hammer throw final.

“There wasn’t much sleep, I haven’t slept on. But you know what, it’s it’s been a crazy whirlwind of emotion and excitement. It’s been an incredible journey.”

Katzenberg is the first and youngest Canadian to win gold at the hammer throw.
