In a surprise announcement late last night St. Catharines regional councillor Andy Petrowski resigned his seat on the Niagara Regional Police Services board where he was vice chair. This comes after he made some controversial comments on radio and on twitter.

He made disparaging statements about gay marriage and Syrian refugees that resulted in complaints being filed and people in the community and his fellow councillors speaking out against him.

In an email to media last night Petrowski said: “it’s with a heavy heart that I made this decision but I want to give more time and attention to my loving family and my 97 year old father.” In his letter he made no mention of these recent controversies.

In December St. Catharines MP Chris Bittle called for him to quit the police services board. “There’s a higher standard on the police services board if this was any police officer we would demand that they be fired immediately.”

Regional council is another matter, “the voters have chosen Mr. Petrowski and he’ll have to go back to the voters again in a few years and it will be their decision at the end of the day.”

Petrowski declined our request for an interview saying he’s been busy today dealing with his family’s issues but did tweet:
For the record the clownish requests from rookie MP and folk arts guy had no weight in my resignation
