St. Catharines residents evacuated after truck roll over on the QEW

A single transport truck roll over on the QEW has closed all lanes in both direction in St. Catharines between Highway 406 and Ontario st.

OPP say just after 3:00 pm a truck hauling a toxic substance called Phosphine, which is highly flammable and dangerous if inhaled, hit the centre guard rail and rolled over onto of it. The truck driver was not injured and no other vehicles were involved.

For safety reasons residents in a 1 km radius of the area were evacuated, while residents in the 2 km radius were asked to shelter in place.

Dangerous goods crew and emergency clean up crews are on the scene. The highway is expected to be closed for another 4-6 hours.

Residents who were evacuated are being asked to stay away another few hours while they clean the scene.  Anyone displaced can go to the Seymour-Hannah Sports and Entertainment Centre at 240 St Paul st W.
