Smithville highway closed Monday after crash seriously injures motorcyclist

Niagara police have launched an investigation into a serious crash in Smithville that left a motorcyclist with life-threatening injuries and shut down Highway 20 for much of Monday.

Emergency crews were called around 8:07 a.m. to the scene of a collision between a white Harley Davidson motorcycle and a blue Hyundai Tucson on Regional Rd. 20, also known as Highway 20, near Streamside Dr.

Officers say the 59-year-old female motorcyclist from West Lincoln was taken to an out-of-region hospital suffering from what is believed to be life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 54-year-old West Lincoln woman, was taken to a local hospital for the treatment of minor injuries.

Detectives from the Niagara Regional Police Service’s collision reconstruction unit along with members of the forensic services unit were called in to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Highway 20 between South Grimsby Rd. 5 and South Grimsby Rd. 6 on the west side of Smithville remained closed for much of the day as police continued to investigate.
