Ontario’s Police Watchdog is investigating a crash in northern Simcoe Wednesday, which sent a 77-year-old woman to hospital with serious injuries.

Members of the Norfolk County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a crash involving a police cruiser and a Honda CRV at the intersection of Norfolk Street North — also known as Highway 24 — and Riverside Road.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says at around 1:30 p.m., an OPP officer was traveling southbound on Norfolk Street North, en route to a call.

At the intersection at Riverside Road, the officer’s cruiser became involved in a collision with the Honda CRV.

The police officer was transported to hospital with minor injuries, while the woman who was driving of the CRV was airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The SIU has invoked its mandate, which it does whenever there’s a serious injury involving police.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
