Short Hills deer hunt begins

(Update)
This is day one of the controversial deer hunt in short hills provincial park in Pelham. The park’s been closed to the public to allow 30 members of the Haudenosaunee First Nation to hunt deer. It’s a right secured in a centuries old treaty. Police and Ministry of Natural Resources officers are posted at every major public access to the 700 hectare park. But protesters argue that somebody might be hurt in the archery hunt if they enter the park on another trail.
The hunt will continue for eight days. The first phase from Thursday until Sunday. The second phase next Thursday to Sunday. As of 5:00pm Thursday, six deer had been killed in the hunt.
