Imagine being locked on a bus with a man wanted for murder, that’s what about 20 people experienced last night after their GO bus that left from Hamilton. It was stopped by police on the Gardiner Expressway but it took 25 minutes for officers to board the bus and arrest the 53-year old man they were looking for. Some of the passengers are upset about how long it took police to make that arrest.

53 year old Joseph Scott Young was taken into custody and is facing a second degree murder charge in relation to the death of a 19 year old man at an Oshawa rooming house in January.

The bus left Hamilton around 10 last night, it was destined for Union Station in Toronto, but was pulled over while on the Gardener Expressway at Kipling. Officers from the OPP, Hamilton Police and Toronto stood outside, the bus driver got off and the door was locked while passengers waited.

In an account of the incident Alex Ramirez wrote:

“An individual from the back of the bus walked to the front after five minutes and tried to open the door. It was locked. He then sat at the front smoked a cigarette.” and “after about 25 minutes of being locked on the bus, about 8 officers entered the bus and arrested the intoxicated individual for second degree murder.”

Durham regional received word that Young would board the bus at the GO station in Hamilton and called Hamilton police for to make the arrest. “They went to the bus station, or to the train station and the person had already left on the bus and that’s when we became involved.” Kerry Schmidt OPP.

The OPP tracked the bus as it moved towards Toronto. A representative from Metrolinx, says that the police pulled the GO bus ove, Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of the OPP says that the bus pulled over on it’s own.

“There was some delay for some of the passengers on the bus, a slight inconvenience, while we were discussing our options and discussing next steps.”

Police say the delay was as a result of the OPP and Hamilton Police waiting for detectives from Durham to arrive and make the arrest. Both sides has been told that Young was not a threat to public safety.
