Second worker tests positive for COVID-19 at St. Catharines hospital

Niagara Health has declared a COVID-19 outbreak in another unit at the St. Catharines hospital after a second worker tested positive for the virus.
The employee worked at the inpatient Unit 4A which is dedicated to caring for COVID-19 patients.
The hospital says the staff member is currently at home and is self-isolating.
“Our highest priority is the health and safety of our patients, staff and physicians,” says Derek McNally, Vice President Clinical Services and Chief Nursing Executive in a news release. “The unit in question will continue to admit patients with COVID-19 and has a number of enhanced safety measures already in place. Niagara Health will follow up with staff and physicians who may have had direct contact with the healthcare worker as a precaution.”
Niagara Region Public Health and the hospital’s Infection Prevention & Control and Occupational Health & Safety teams are working together to monitor the situation and will adjust measures as required to ensure everyone’s safety.
On April 11, an outbreak was declared in Unit 3A at the hospital after a different worker tested positive. At the time, safety measures were put in place including temporarily closing the unit in question to all admissions and transfers.
