Residents are worried about their safety crossing at an intersection in Waterdown

A man in a wheelchair says that he almost gets hit by a car everyday while crossing Dundas street in Waterdown.

He’s not alone, other residents told CHCH news that something has to be done, before someone gets killed.

Richard Bertin fears for his safety just crossing the street at the intersection of Dundas and Hamilton in Waterdown.

“You put your life on the line whenever you cross this corner.”

Bertin says he nearly gets run down daily.

“I’ve had my wheelchair for a month and I think I’ve almost been hit everyday, yesterday it was twice. What do we do, how do we get help?”

He’s not the only one concerned. Amber Cain says it’s only a matter of time until a pedestrian gets killed here.

“My issue with this intersection is as a mom trying to teach my three year old to look left look right. That don’t matter around this corner. We’ve actually almost been hit numerous, numerous times.”

Hamilton Police know this is a trouble spot for drivers running red lights but can’t police it all the time.

“Sometimes the best we can do because of other calls for service, maybe the officer would sit there for 20 minutes. A collision comes, call for service comes and then they have to go do that.”

Cst. Claus Wagner of the Traffic Division says he understands pedestrians concerns but says they also have some responsibility to ensure it’s safe to cross.

“Take a look around, is that car stopping, especially at a busy intersection where cars sometimes don’t stop. Is it stopping, okay it’s safe to walk.”

“This is one of the busiest intersections in Waterdown and just last week there was an accident involving a cube van. Area residents say more needs to be done to make it safe for pedestrians to cross the street.”

“Instead of these advanced greens we need turning signals that go from green yellow and red, we need to stop people from turning during the crosswalks times.”

As busy as that intersection is it’s not even in the top ten of worst intersections in the city. That title goes to Main and Dundurn where there have already been 25 minor car accidents this year.
