The RCMP is warning the public about a “scareware” computer scam.

Kitchener officers say they’ve received reports from people saying their computers are being frozen or they have been locked, after getting pop-up messages claiming their computer has been associated with pornography. The messages claim to be from the RCMP and tell the person to pay $100 via “U-Kash” to unlock their computers within two days, or they’ll face criminal charges. The RCMP has a list of tips on their website to avoid becoming a “scareware” victim.
