Global Affairs Canada confirms two Canadians are missing after a streetcar crash in Lisbon, Portugal on Wednesday.
Officials say 16 people are dead and 21 others injured after a streetcar derailed and crashed into a building.
There has been no confirmation of Canadian deaths, but Portugal’s attorney general says there is a high probability that the Canadians are dead based on recovered documents and additional evidence.
The electric streetcar — also known as a funicular — is harnessed by steel cables and can carry more than 40 people.
In a statement to CHCH News, Global Affairs says it is aware of the two missing Canadians and is working with local authorities.
The department says no further information will be shared due to privacy considerations.
