Radiohead “shattered” by drum tech death at Downsview

Radiohead has issued a statement in reaction to the death of one of their crew members, who died after the stage at Downsview Park collapsed Saturday in Toronto.

Scott Johnson, 33, died when the stage collapsed just hours before a scheduled Radiohead concert.

In the statement, Radiohead writes, “We have all been shattered by the loss of Scott Johnson, our friend and colleague. He was a lovely man, always positive, supportive and funny; a highly skilled and valued member of our great road crew. We will miss him very much. Our thoughts and love are with Scott’s family and all those close to him.”

Dundas native Dan Snaith was scheduled to open for Radiohead with his band Caribou.

They also released a statement via Twitter after the collapse happened, which read, “We are profoundly saddened by what happened today. All our sympathy is with the band and crew and the families of those affected.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Labour was at the park Sunday investigating why the stage collapse happened.

Toronto police have also sent three forensic specialists to Downsview Park.

Another 45-year-old man was sent to hospital Saturday when the collapse happened, and two others were treated on scene for minor injuries.

Around 40,000 fans were expected to attend the show, and refunds will be issued in the coming weeks.
