Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has cancelled all of his traditional year-end media interviews to “reflect” after Monday’s caucus shakeup.
Energy Minister Jonathan Wilkinson says Trudeau is taking some time to reflect after the sudden resignation of Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland Monday.
Wilkinson also says the prime minister is also reflecting on what he’s heard from members of his own caucus.
There are growing calls from within the party for Trudeau to step down as leader.
The House of Commons is now on a holiday break, giving Trudeau a few weeks to decide his next move before MPs return to Ottawa on Jan. 27.
Calls for Trudeau’s resignation
Meanwhile Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has once more called on NDP leader Jagmeet Singh to topple the government.
Singh called for Trudeau to step down on Monday, but did not make a firm comment on how the NDP party would vote in a non-confidence motion against the Liberal government.
Poilievre says Canada needs an election because the U.S. President Elect Donald Trump “can spot weakness from a mile away.”
The Bloc Québécois leader Yves-François Blanchet added that a new parliament is needed “as soon as possible,” and that he wants to see an election called in January.
Blanchet says Trudeau has lost “political, moral and ethical authority to govern.”
Making time to appear at holiday party
The prime minister still showed up at the Liberal Party’s holiday party Tuesday night in Ottawa where he expressed his gratitude for the party’s support.
“It has been an eventful couple of days, it hasn’t been easy,” Trudeau said. “And that’s why I’m so happy to see you guys. You know it’s hard not to feel happy when we’re like this – Liberals – among family. Because that’s what we really are, a big family.”
He also said that despite there being some fights around the holidays like in most families that “we find our way through it.”
Chrystia Freeland also attended the party.
