Niagara police are asking residents of a neighbourhood east of the canal and south of Durham Street in Port Colborne to stay inside and lock their doors as an active investigation is underway.
Officers say early Wednesday morning, they received information about a possible weapons incident in the area.
Uniform officers and members of the Emergency Task Unit have isolated the incident to two locations: one on Fares Street, north of Louis Street, and another on Mitchell Street between Nickel and Decew streets.
People who live nearby are being asked to stay inside and lock their doors until police arrest the suspect.
While officers have shared limited information regarding the nature of this investigation, police have confirmed it does not involve an active shooter.
Police are advising parents with children in the area to drive their child directly to school or keep them at home.
Niagara police say nearby schools have been placed in a hold-and-secure, including DeWitt Carter Public School, Lakeshore Catholic High School, École élémentaire catholique Saint- Joseph, and Saint Thérèse Catholic Elementary School.
