Police watchdog investigates man’s death in Fort Erie, Ont.

Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after a man died following his arrest by Niagara police in Fort Erie, Ont.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says a 40-year-old man died on Oct. 1 after being taken into custody.

The SIU says officers were called to a home in Fort Erie on Sept. 27 for a disturbance call.

Police attempted to arrest the man, but he fled on foot. He was later handcuffed following a struggle.

He was taken to hospital before being returned to police custody.

During his time in custody, the SIU says the man allegedly attempted to harm himself.

The investigation into the man’s death is ongoing.
