Ontario’s air ambulance service was called in, however, Niagara paramedics transported the woman to an out-of-region hospital.
Police say the 79-year old woman went to hospital with serious injuries but they appear to be no threat to her life.
Officers say the woman remains in hospital on Wednesday and no charges have been laid, but the investigation is ongoing.
The City of St. Catharines issued a statement that reads, in part: “the safety and well-being of our crossing guards, who play a vital role in ensuring the safety of our community’s children, is of utmost importance to us. Our thoughts are with the injured crossing guard and their family, and we are hopeful for a speedy recovery.”
CHCH News spoke to a man who says he was the driver of the truck and adds that a vehicle in the opposite lane entered his lane. He says he hit the breaks and then lost control.
Police say the Ministry of Labour was also notified.
The roads in the area have reopened to traffic while police continue to investigate. They are asking anyone with information to contact them.
