Police across province gather for Const. Pierzchala’s funeral

Members of Hamilton Police board a bus Wednesday morning to head to Barrie to attend the funeral for Ontario Provincial Police Const. Grzegorz (Greg) Pierzchała.
The private funeral service for 28-year-old Const. Pierzchala is taking place at the Saldon Arena at 11 a.m. in Barrie.
The funeral procession is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. and travel from Adams Funeral Home to the arena.
According to York University’s records, Pierzchala was born in Barrie and previously attended St. Joan of Arc catholic high school in Vaughan.
Members of Pierzchala’s family will be joined by the OPP, Canadian Armed Forces members, and other police service and first responder officials
Ontario Premier Doug Ford will also be in attendance at the funeral.
Police say the funeral service is not open to the public, but it will be available as a live-stream on the CHCH News YouTube channel.

The Haldimand County OPP Detachment officer was fatally shot on Dec. 27 near Hagersville, Ont. while responding to reports of a vehicle in a ditch at Indian Line and Concession 14.
Officers arrested and charged 25-year-old Randall McKenzie and 30-year-old Brandy Stewart-Sperry with first-degree murder.
Reports say Pierzchala had just recently completed his probation to become a permanent member of the OPP.

A procession travelled from Toronto to Barrie on Dec. 30, bringing the body of Pierzchala home.
Officers and other first responders saluted Pierzchala outside the coroner’s office as the procession started.
Hundreds of people paid tribute along Highway 400, raising their hands as a sign of respect as police vehicles passed by with flashing lights.

The shooting suspects charged in the death of Const. Pierzchala are being held in custody until their next court appearance on Jan. 17.
