Plaza fire on Cornwall Road in Oakville evacuates nearby businesses
A number of businesses in Oakville were evacuated this morning after a fire broke out in the plaza’s HVAC system. While there were no injuries, the fire shut down the businesses for the day.
An evacuation took place just after 9 a.m. as these businesses were opening up.
The plaza on Cornwall Road, just off Trafalgar, has a couple of retail stores, a spa, a dentist, and a bank. People working there were just getting their day started when smoke quickly filled some of the units.
The deputy fire chief says the HVAC unit in the ceiling at one of the businesses in the middle of the plaza caught on fire.
Jeremy Inglis, Deputy Fire Chief, said, “It was pretty fast to extinguish once they got on the roof. It was a small fire that had been contained inside the HVAC unit, with a little bit of charring on the roof structure.”
Everyone made it out safely, and there were no injuries. Oakville’s fire prevention team was on the scene to investigate.
No word yet on how much damage was caused, but the deputy chief says these businesses will be able to reopen in the morning.
