Hamilton Food Share calls for support this Giving Tuesday
Giving Tuesday is the Tuesday after the Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping madness, when people are encouraged to volunteer their time or donate to charities.
Hamilton Food Share says the need in our community has never been more evident, and simply buying groceries has become a luxury many people can’t afford.
Packing up food today at Hamilton Food Share on Barton Street in Stoney Creek, Mayor Andrea Horwath says Hamiltonians are struggling.
“People are finding it really, really hard to take care of all the basics — paying the rent, paying the bills, ensuring you have food on the table. And as everyone knows, the cost of everything is continuing to skyrocket,” Horwath said.
Hamilton Food Share is an emergency food shipping and receiving hub that provides food and supplies to 22 hunger relief programs operating in neighborhoods across our city. Hamilton Food Share says one out of every three people using a food bank in Hamilton has never done so before.
Giving Tuesday has become a global day to remind those who can, to donate their time or money to help those in need.
Juno Award-winning singer and songwriter Sean Jones used his platform to raise $10,000 for Hamilton Food Share over the weekend.
Hamilton Food Share is always looking for pantry staples like pasta and tuna, but if you go on their website and donate any amount of money, they say they can make those dollars stretch further.
