A group of community volunteers invited hundreds of migrant workers in the Flamborough area to a picnic to show their appreciation.

Over 300 migrant workers came out to the event at Christie Lake Conservation Area.

They come from all over the world including Mexico, Nicaragua, Honduras, Jamaica, Guatemala, Thailand, and Cambodia.

Organizers say the event was meant to raise awareness and create inclusivity in Flamborough among migrant workers.

Terry Sciamonte from Migrants Matter said these workers spend a good eight months of their lives here every year, spending more time in our community than they do with their own families.

“This is about inclusivity, it’s about making them feel welcome, and just going out and caring, doing outreach, providing services that they might not get otherwise,” Sciamonte said.

“So it’s just acknowledging that without the farm workers here, the farms would not exist.”

This was the organization’s third annual picnic event.
