Construction of a $36 million community centre in Pelham, could start as early as this summer.

Pelham town council held a meeting last night, to vote on whether to go ahead with the multi-million dollar project. The community centre was approved five-to-two by councillors, meaning construction could start as early as August. The new centre will be built on the corner of Rice Road and Regional 20, and will include two NHL sized ice rinks, two gymnasiums and a walking track.

Some residents had opposed the project, which is expected to increase property taxes by over 3% to pay for part of the complex. That’s about an additional $46 in property taxes, for the next 30-years.

Construction of the community centre is expected to take two years to complete.
