Ontario reports 3,338 COVID-19 cases as death toll surpasses 5,000 people

Ontario reported 3,338 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday as the death toll from the virus surpassed 5,000 people.

Another 8,859 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine were administered on Sunday. That brings the total number of doses administered to 122,105 as of 8 p.m. Sunday.

Here are the COVID-19 numbers for our region

Hamilton

  • 7,474 total cases — up 155 from Sunday
  • 5,680 resolved cases
  • 1,490 active cases
  • 202 deaths — up two from Sunday

Halton

  • 7,064 total cases — up 58 from Sunday
  • 6,243 resolved cases
  • 688 active cases
  • 133 deaths — up two from Sunday

Niagara

  • 5,675 total cases — up 471 from Sunday**
  • 4,041 resolved cases
  • 1,438 active cases
  • 196 deaths — up 10 from Sunday

** Niagara Region Public Health says today’s numbers reflect an additional 388 cases that weren’t previously reported because of a backlog.

Brant

  • 1,147 total cases — up 10 from Sunday
  • 944 resolved cases
  • 197 active cases
  • 6 deaths
  • 5 in hospital

Haldimand-Norfolk

  • 1,121 total cases — up 7 from Sunday
  • 888 resolved cases
  • 193 active cases
  • 35 deaths

Numbers reported Monday come as the province completed 46,403 tests, with 28,774 under investigation.

Another 29 COVID-19 deaths were reported, bringing the total number of deaths to 5,012.

There are 1,563 patients currently hospitalized with COVID-19, however the province says some hospitals did not submit data, as is often the case on weekends.

There are 387 people in intensive care including 268 on ventilators.

Another 2,756 cases of COVID-19 have been marked as resolved. Nearly 84 per cent of the COVID-19 cases in Ontario are resolved.

Premier Ford set to announce more COVID-19 restrictions on Tuesday

This comes as Ontario’s cabinet is meeting Monday to consider new measures to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Premier Doug Ford says an announcement will be made on Tuesday, the same day new COVID-19 projections are set to be released.

Ontario health officials are not recommending a curfew at this time, senior government officials confirm to CHCH News.
