Ontario drivers foot the bill for road costs

Ontario drivers may be paying most of the bill for road infrastructure costs, to the tune of more than $7.5 billion a year.

The Conference Board of Canada says Ontario motorists are paying 70 to 90 per cent of the costs of roads through fuel taxes, vehicle registration fees and tolls, with those in the Toronto-Hamilton area actually paying more in fees and taxes than it costs to operate the road network.

The study points out that a lot of those revenues stay with the province rather than going to local municipalities.
