Off-duty Niagara officer charged with assault after Welland altercation

An off-duty Niagara police officer has been charged with assault following an altercation in Welland.

Niagara police learned about accusations regarding one of their constables after receiving an anonymous 911 call about an incident at a business on May 20.

Upon arrival, police found out that the off-duty officer was involved in an altercation and was taken to hospital where he was treated and released.

Police say no one else was physically injured as a result of the altercation.

Const. Grant Yantha was arrested and charged with two counts of assault on Monday.

The force says Yantha was released from custody and is set to appear at a St. Catharines courthouse on August 25.

Police say Yantha has been an officer with the force for one year and was off-duty at the time of the alleged offence.

The officer has been suspended with pay in accordance with the Police Services Act of Ontario.
