No raises for Ontario docs

Ontario doctors are being told not to expect a raise.

Premier McGuinty says the government has made it clear the Liberals will “hold the line” on pay increases for doctors. He says doctors will understand because the Liberals have worked well with them in the past.

Health minister Deb Matthews says the government has to make some hard choices about where to put health care dollars.

“We have limited resources in healthcare and across government so I have to be very strategic about where we spend those new dollars.”

NDP leader Andrea Horwath’s response: “Doctors are one piece of the puzzle when it comes to healthcare spending. If they are prepared to talk tough with doctors why aren’t they prepared to put hard caps on CEO salaries?”

Freezing pay for doctors was among the recommendations of the Drummond report.
