A new program with the Niagara SPCA and Humane Society has some of the adoptable dogs going out on a day pass, with the help from volunteers.
It’s all in an effort to not only get the dogs socialized, but to also increase their chances of getting adopted.
It’s a day out on the town in Niagara Falls for several four-legged friends.
“It’s good socializing for the dogs, so even if it doesn’t amount to an adoption, it amounts to a socializing experience for them,” said Tammy Gaboury, Animal Care Manager at Niagara SPCA & Humane Society, “and it’s also a stress reducer for the dogs.”

It’s all part of a program called Paws on the Town, with the Niagara SPCA and Humane Society.
Volunteers can take an adoptable dog out of the shelter and into the community for the day.
“They are five times more likely to be adopted as a result of the visibility that they get when they are out, and it also gives them an opportunity to build up their confidence, and develop some socialization skills while they’re out,” said Amelia Canto, the CEO of the Niagara SPCA and Humane Society.
The program has been around for just over a month, and so far four dogs have been adopted.

“One of the dogs went and walked around the outlet mall in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and a family met the dog, and they came in and filled out the application and adopted the dogs,” said Gaboury.
The Niagara SPCA and Humane Society currently has around 50 dogs in their care and they are looking for more volunteers to take part in the program.
