Niagara public health officials have confirmed nine known measles cases in the community – all of which are in people who are unvaccinated against the virus.

In a statement on Tuesday, Dr. Azim Kasmani with Niagara Region Public Health encouraged residents to check their vaccination records and ensure they’re up to date.

“Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself and your community against measles,” he said.

He added that two doses of measles-containing vaccine will provide lifelong immunity in 98 per cent of people.

Niagara health officials say they are monitoring the situation closely, including through contact tracing and supporting vaccination efforts.

Anyone who develops measles symptoms is encouraged to stay home and contact their health care provider.
