Niagara police make rescue, arrest 2 men on Port Colborne ice

Two men were arrested Wednesday afternoon for theft after they attempted to cross the frozen Lake Erie and one man swam through the water.
Niagara police responded to reports of a theft in progress just after noon at the Lake Erie Waterfront in Port Colborne.
They say that two men had crossed the ice with bicycles to a break wall near the Port Colborne/Lake Erie light house.
Investigators suspect that the men were stealing cable and wire.
The Niagara Police Marine Unit attended while wearing ice survival suits to walk across the ice, and arrested one man.
The second man tried to escape by walking across the frozen lake and briefly wading into open water.
Officers arrested him after he arrived at shore at around 2:10 p.m.
Emergency crews attended both men and assessed them for hypothermia.

Police have charged 45-year-old Timothy Charles Pye of Port Colborne with theft over $5,000 and failing to comply with a probation order.
They have also charged 52-year-old Stephen Grant Kelly of Welland for theft over $5,000, failing to comply with probation and possessing break-in instruments.
Pye and Kelly were held in custody pending a bail hearing at a St. Catharines courthouse Thursday.
Detectives say a damage estimate has not been fully determined.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
