Niagara police arrest eight in back-to-school traffic safety initiative

Niagara police have made eight arrests in its week-long back-to-school traffic safety initiative called Project Safe Start.

Officers say of the eight arrests, one was made for an outstanding warrant and the seven others were for Controlled Drugs and Substances Act violations.

Police say hundreds of traffic stops were initiated, with 188 tickets and 49 Part III court summons issued for various Highway Traffic Act offences. 152 warnings were also issued.

Niagara police says this project was aimed to educate the public on road safety and enforce traffic laws where applicable at all Niagara Region schools.

Although the project has officially concluded, the Traffic Enforcement Unit says it remains active in patrolling and enforcing school areas across the region.
