A member of the Niagara police force with more than 20 years of experience has been suspended with pay, and is facing a charge of assault.

Officials said Tuesday allegations of a uniformed officer being involved in an altercation with a suspect came to light in early August, prompting an investigation.

To eliminate any conflict of interest, Niagara police asked Hamilton officials to step in and take over the case.

As a result, Ben Tomiuck was suspended, and will appear in court in January to face the assault charge.
