Niagara fruit will be in grocery stores soon

They’re just over blossoms, looking ahead to the harvest. Today Niagara’s tender fruit growers invited their biggest and best customers into the orchard for a taste of what this season will offer. They gathered in the middle of Tregunno’s orchard in
Niagara-On-the-Lake this afternoon. All the movers and shakers in the tender fruit and grocery business – Sobey’s, Loblaw, Walmart, Metro and Costco.

“We want to get them excited about the upcoming season – we’re going to have a really nice crop” says Matt Ecker from Vineland Growers.

Niagara’s 400 growers harvest about 13 million baskets of peaches – the retailers are the ones who entice the fruit buying customers into their stores. “They support us, and they have been good working with us to get local product on the shelves” says grower Phil Tregunno.

The grocery giants are critical to the success of the season – they sell ninety per cent of the fruit harvested from the trees. Fruit that consumers will start seeing in their neighbourhood grocery store in a matter of weeks.
