An 18-year-old from Niagara who lost both his hands and feet has won $5,000 towards his recovery.

Nick Roma suffered severe septic shock while undergoing treatment for leukemia last year and had to have his hands and feet removed. The “Stay Strong Nick Roma” campaign came first in votes for his category and second overall in the 2012 Aviva Community Fund — which gave away $1 million this year. Roma is reportedly learning to walk again using training legs. The goal is to eventually get prosthetics, which could cost up to $50,000 each.
