New hero in the hockey world

A Whitby man remains the talk of the hockey world. David Ayres, a 42-year-old emergency backup goalie, and full-time Zamboni driver — helped the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-3 last night. Ayers was called into action after Hurricanes netminders James Reimer and Petr Mrazek were both injured. After letting in two quick goals in the 2nd period, Ayres was back for the third period and made eight saves. Maple Leaf fans were quick to admit they were cheering on the Hurricanes in that final period. He was named first star of the game and received a standing ovation from the Leaf fans. The stick he used is going in the Hockey Hall of Fame. David Ayres will be a guest of the Hurricanes in Raleigh, North Carolina for their home game on Tuesday.
